About the National Merit Scholarship Program

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition that honors high school students based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Of the students that take the test, only a select number of students are designated as Semifinalists and Commended Students.

Commended Students - Approximately 34,000 of the roughly 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in acknowledgment of their exceptional academic potential.

Semifinalists - Approximately 16,000 students among the top 50,000 scorers are notified of their qualification as Semifinalists. To progress to Finalist status in the competition, Semifinalists must meet rigorous academic standards and fulfill additional requirements.

Finalists - Approximately 15,000 semifinalists are informed of their advancement to finalist status. High school principals receive notifications and are provided with certificates to present to each finalist.
