Fall Book Fair Celebrates and Encourages Reading

Students, teachers, and parents had a wonderful time perusing the wide selection of books at the Fall Book Fair held in the main lobby from October 29 to November 1. Sponsored by the PTO and the school libraries, the event featured a diverse range of books for all ages, thanks to the collaboration with TongBang Books. Featuring over 3,000 titles –from giant picture books, paperback novels, and comic books, to adult reads at 25% less than retail, there was something for everyone to read. In addition, over 300 titles were contributed by the Christian book vendor, Word of Life.

The final two days of the fair coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences, providing an excellent opportunity for parents and students to browse while on campus. Thanks to the generosity of the YISS community, 274 books were donated by parents and 45 books by the PTO, contributing to a total of 320 new books to the ES and MS ELA classroom libraries. These donations are sure to enrich the reading experiences of students both at home and in school.

Among the most popular titles at the fair were Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hot Mess, Dog Man: The Scarlet Shredder, and The Academy IV: Title Fight. The event was a clear success, not only in terms of sales but also in fostering a love of reading. The steady flow of visitors throughout the four days highlighted the strong interest in new titles, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the YISS PTO to support reading-related initiatives. This includes prizes for the ES Read-a-Thon, author visits, and other events designed to engage the whole school community.

A sincere thank you to everyone who visited the fair and those who generously donated books to enhance our classroom libraries. A special thank you goes to the Fall Book Fair Committee members—Sujin Park, Esther Ho, Jenny Chon, Angie Lee, Charles Chan, and Pedzi Viriri—as well as the dedicated team of parent volunteers. Their hard work in helping students find new books and organizing the book donations was crucial to the event's success.

Events like the Fall Book Fair are vital in promoting literacy and inspiring a lifelong love of reading and learning. The YISS community looks forward to next year’s fair to continue building a vibrant reading culture at YISS.
