First Graders Sing About Impacting the World

On the evening of Tuesday, April 30, YISS first graders showcased the music skills they have learned this year. Students worked with the school theme Impacting the World and shared songs and narrations that explained to the audience how they too can make a difference in the world we live in.

The evening began with the performers singing and clapping to the steady beat of the song “We Can Make A Difference.” “Big Heart” allowed students to demonstrate their ability to find and keep a steady beat through a variety of songs, and towards the end of the songs, students played a melodic pattern on the handbells. Soloists showed off their singing skills in the song “Kindness.” Finally, concertgoers were treated to student conductors leading the song “In This World Together” while student drawings representing ways to make a difference in this world were projected behind them.

The audience was also treated to a self-composed song by each class. Students worked together with their classmates to write the lyrics, create the rhythm and solfege patterns, as well as choose instruments and a title. Students showed off their skills as singers and instrumentalists as each class took turns performing their songs.
