Read-a-Thon 2020 Allows ES to “Choose Their Own Adventure”

Read-a-Thon 2020 kicked off on February 17 with an adventure in the jungle of South America! “Choose Your Own Adventure” began with a skit involving several teachers who were planning an adventure in Paraguay to find a chest full of golden pineapples! As a part of the fun, students and staff came to school dressed up as jungle animals that day. Excitement filled the auditorium as the reading goals were announced and how students could participate in the adventure the teachers were going on. Some teachers were evacuated from the jungle adventure based on the choices the students made.

On Friday, February 21, author and illustrator Marissa Moss visited YISS to share her stories and illustrations with our students. Some of them won drawings she had created during the visit. The following week YISS began virtual learning due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in Korea, but it did not stop students from reading!

In April, we used had a virtual Closing Assembly for Read-a-Thon and announced all the winners and the prizes in the video. It was revealed that Mrs. Kennedy and Mr. Marshall made it through the adventure and were the ones to find the golden pineapple. The reading goal was set at 772,020 minutes, but our students far exceed that by reading a total of 884,790 minutes. This meant that three of our 428 participants were able to “Pie the Principals”!

This year’s Read-a-Thon may not have gone as planned, but our students really enjoyed “Choose Your Own Adventure.” The reading adventure may have ended, but many of our students and families would agree that the last three months have been a unique and unexpected adventure to navigate!
